Norms in Trinidad and Tobago (Part 3): Local Food

The Doubles Man

To end this journey on Local food, I decided to do a post on Doubles and the reactions tourists have to this Trini treat. Sold on nearly every street corner in Trinidad, a Doubles stand consists of your average Bara (the dough used to hold the ingredients) with chana, shadow beni, slight pepper - if you're not a pepper person - and any other ingredient of your choice. It's sold at any time of the day and is eaten hot, warm or even cold.

When I asked the Doubles vendor about the reactions foreigners have to the Trini treat, he said that it varies. Some like it and even carry back bags of it for family and friends while others prefer the sweeter confections that Trinidad has to offer. He also noted that Venezuelans preferred Doubles more than any other tourist.

What I find peculiar is that there are few (if any at all) Doubles stands in Tobago.
